Origins of Naturopathic Medicine
The origin of naturopathic medicine can be traced back to the ancient
healing arts of a variety of cultures. As a formal system of medicine
and healing, it was developed in the United States nearly one hundred
years ago by Benjamin Lust.
To heal in harmony with the natural functions
of the body - without harm - is the underlying principle of the naturopathic
system of medicine. The intent is to support the natural healing potential
of the human body. It is this combination of the healing power of nature
and scientific methods that makes naturopathic medicine an important
system of medicine for today's health care.
Naturopathic medicine looks for the cause of the problem. This means
that the problem is less likely to return once medication is stopped.
Natural medicine, if used properly does not have the same side effects
of pharmaceutical medication (prescription drugs).
Naturopathic medicine treats health issues holistically, which involves
consideration of the physical as well as mental and emotional.
Many problems are due to poor functioning of the body, i.e. poor digestion,
constipation, menstrual pain, rather than actual disease. Naturopathic
medicine restores proper functioning of the body.
Diet and lifestyle issues are addressed, which are an important part
of ill health. Treatment is gentle and effective.
